Wprowadzenie

How can communities shape the decisions that affect their soils, food and territories? Soilathon brings together participants from African and European territories to exchange knowledge, develop practical responses and turn shared challenges into policy proposals. Through collaborative sessions and institutional dialogue, participants explore soil restoration, land rights, food democracy and fair cooperation.

Szczegóły

Soil health is connected to how we grow food, access land, sustain livelihoods and make collective decisions. Soilathon is a collaborative process within SOILTRIBES that brings these connections into focus, creating space for communities to develop responses rooted in their territories and experiences.

Building on the priorities emerging from Crossing Territories #2, participants work in teams across African and European territories. Together, they explore shared pressures and important differences, exchange practical knowledge and develop proposals that connect local action with institutional change. The process values farmer-to-farmer learning and recognises that practices must be adapted to local conditions.

Teams will work around four interconnected challenges:

  • Land rights and territorial justice: access to land and communities’ influence over decisions affecting their territories.

  • Soil literacy: making soil knowledge and locally appropriate restoration practices accessible and useful.

  • Food democracy: strengthening people’s ability to shape their food systems.

  • Fair Africa–Europe cooperation and community funding: developing more equitable partnerships and support for community priorities.

The programme combines participatory dilemmas, territorial exchanges, knowledge sharing, prototype development and policy discussions:

  • 12 November: explore soil democracy dilemmas, connect territories and define team challenges.

  • 17 November: exchange restoration practices and begin developing practical territorial responses.

  • 20–25 November: facilitated team meetings to refine proposals and prepare presentations.

  • 27 November: develop policy recommendations and review proposals through community and institutional perspectives.

  • 2 December, provisional: present proposals and discuss implementation with policymakers and institutional representatives at Canòdrom, Barcelona.

The closing session will help teams refine their proposals, identify potential partners and define concrete follow-up actions.

Cele

  • Connect participants across African and European territories through reciprocal learning grounded in local realities.

  • Explore how soil restoration intersects with land rights, livelihoods, food systems and democratic participation.

  • Exchange practical knowledge and identify the conditions needed to adapt restoration practices to different contexts.

  • Develop a practical response to each team’s territorial challenge, supported by relevant experiences and evidence.

  • Translate those responses into specific policy proposals, identifying responsible actors and institutional barriers.

  • Review proposals for equity, feasibility and accountability, including who benefits, who carries additional work and who might be excluded.

  • Identify follow-up actions, potential partnerships and opportunities for implementation.
