Introduction

SOILTRIBES Bootcamp #2 – Barcelona, Spain

The second SOILTRIBES Bootcamp builds on the momentum created in Porto and marks the next step in our journey to rethink how we understand, care for, and govern soil. This time, we gather in Barcelona to deepen and advance the four winning challenges, moving from early ideas toward more concrete prototypes and actionable strategies.
This bootcamp is a space for consolidation, iteration, and applied co-creation. Participants will continue weaving together scientific, civic, and artistic perspectives while strengthening the proposals that were strenghtened during Bootcamp #1.

Details

A participatory, arts-based development loop

The Barcelona bootcamp continues the SOILTRIBES learning cycle, but with a stronger focus on refinement and prototyping:

1. Refining Narratives

2. Deliberation, Design & Decision-Making

3. Prototyping & Digital Integration

How the four challenges were selected

Before the Porto bootcamp, SOILTRIBES launched an open call for soil-related challenges. Members of the Community of Practice proposed key dilemmas around soil literacy, soil culture, and soil governance.

From this open pool, ten challenges were initially selected and explored during Bootcamp #1. Throughout the sessions, participants refined their ideas, expanded their narratives, and tested early concepts.

Based on their evolution during the bootcamp — including openness, collaborative spirit, feasibility, and potential for impact — four challenges were selected to move into the next phase of development.

These are the challenges we will continue to develop, strengthen, and prototype together in Barcelona.

Objectives

Objectives

The main goal of the SOILTRIBES Bootcamp #2 is to advance the four winning challenges through collaborative design, experimentation, and collective intelligence. More specifically, the event aims to:

  • Revisit, refine, and expand the foundational insights gathered in Porto.

  • Move from ideation to concrete prototypes, draft actions, and implementable strategies.

  • Test and adapt deliberative and arts-based methods that can support ecological democracy and soil governance.

  • Ensure continuity, allowing the broader community to review, comment, and support each challenge.

  • Prepare the teams for the next development phase, ensuring clarity of purpose, and feasible next steps.
