COVERYOURSOIL Bootcamp v2 Barcelona March 19th 2026 Update
From Bare Ground to Biodiversity: The Launch of the CoverYourSoil Roadmap in Barcelona
On March 19th, 2026, the Soiltribes community took a decisive step forward at Bootcamp v2 in Barcelona. This gathering marked the beginning of a collaborative, six-month journey to design a strategic roadmap for the creation of three innovative Cover Crop Living Labs across Poland, Romania, and Spain. Building on the initial foundations of the COVERYOURSOIL project who's journey began back in October 2025 in Porto, Portugal, this phase transitions conceptual goals into a science-based, and farmer-led implementation Roadmap.
The core mission of COVERYOURSOIL is centered on promoting living soils from bare ground to biodiversity . The project addresses critical environmental and economic needs, including soil health improvement, erosion prevention, and the enhancement of economic returns for agricultural producers . By focusing on native species and localized cover crop innovation, the initiative seeks to repair agricultural ecosystems while ensuring long-term food security.
The success of this roadmap relies on a powerful convening of expertise. Our consortium brings together three pilot farms representing diverse pedoclimatic and biogeographic regions across the three partner countries. Scientific excellence is provided by experts from InHort (Institute of Horticulture) and the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), including IRWiR PAN, who offer the biological and agro-economic research backbone . Partners such as Eco Ruralis, Grunt od Nowe, and EFFOST ensure that the process remains grounded in real-world farm needs and sustainable practices .
Over the next half-year, this group will work collaboratively to develop the knowledge required to launch experimental living lab sites. Key objectives include creating rigorous protocols to test localized cover crop mixes through science-based, farmer-led innovation . We will establish measurable benchmarks for soil biota, biodiversity, and ecosystem recovery documentation . Additionally, the team is developing a Cost-Benefit Analysis and a comprehensive financing plan, with a total funding goal of 180,000 euros (60,000 euros per site) to support the transition to protected soils .
COVERYOURSOIL is more than a research project; it is a movement for social welfare and farmer resilience . Through knowledge transfer systems—including Peer-to-Peer (P2P) pairs, Mentor Buddy systems, and bioregional sample seed packs—we are fostering a collective network for a better future . We are also integrating Citizen Science through the ECHO initiative and localized seed banks to ensure that community heritage is preserved and utilized for field recovery .
As we conclude our time in Barcelona, we look toward a future where our fields are no longer bare, but teeming with life. Join us in the SoilTribes community as we continue this journey from bare ground to biodiversity.
