AI-Powered Soil Literacy & Early Warning Platform for Sustainable Farming

Avatar: Ahmet Cevahir Cinar Ahmet Cevahir Cinar

Summary of the Challenge
Small and medium-sized farms lack timely and accessible soil health insights. Soil degradation, drought, and nutrient deficiencies are often detected too late, reducing yields and resilience.
Detailed description
This proposal aims to co-create a digital platform that translates soil health data into actionable insights for farmers and communities. Combining remote sensing, on-site sensors, and AI-based data completion methods, the platform will support early detection of soil stress factors (drought, nutrient imbalance, erosion). The solution also integrates soil literacy resources, making scientific knowledge accessible through farmer-friendly dashboards and storytelling tools. By connecting academia, farmers, and SMEs, the initiative bridges technological innovation with everyday practice.
Which SoilTribes priority area(s) does your challenge address?
Soil Democracy
How does your challenge respond to the selected SoilTribes priority area(s)?
We democratize soil knowledge by providing open, verifiable, and farmer-accessible data. By giving soils a “digital voice,” the platform strengthens their representation in local and EU-level decision-making.
Which EU Soil Mission goal(s) does your challenge contribute to?
Reduce soil pollution / enhance restoration
Conserve soil organic carbon
Reduce desertification
Enhance soil biodiversity
Challenge typology
Seeds (small, replicable initiatives)
Expected outputs / actions
Capacity-building (training, guides, mentorship)
Participatory processes
Prototyping or technical testing
Who is involved or affected by the challenge?
This challenge primarily involves small and medium-sized farmers who need accessible and reliable soil health monitoring. It also engages universities and research groups, particularly in computer engineering, soil science, and agriculture, as well as SMEs and technology providers such as Sentius Technology. Farmer associations, rural cooperatives, and civil society actors are key stakeholders for knowledge sharing and uptake. Finally, local and regional policymakers responsible for soil, water, and land management are affected, as the platform can inform decision-making processes.
Which SoilTribes pillar(s) are you connected to?
Public Sector
Academia, Education & Research
What public policies or institutional frameworks does your challenge engage with or seek to change?
No. However, the proposal is open to collaboration and joint development with other Bootcamp participants. This challenge engages with the EU Soil Monitoring Law, the EU Carbon Farming Certification Framework, and national agricultural digitalization policies in Türkiye. By providing accessible soil health data and farmer-friendly tools, it supports the implementation of soil governance at both national and European levels.
How do you imagine the Bootcamp will benefit your initiative — and others?
The Bootcamp will provide an opportunity to refine and validate our prototype through co-creation with diverse stakeholders. We hope to learn from farmers, technologists, and policymakers across Europe, ensuring that the platform meets real needs and is adaptable to different contexts. In return, we bring expertise in AI-powered soil monitoring and digital agriculture, offering innovative methods that others can test, adapt, and integrate into their local initiatives.
